Local Leaders and Support for Polio Vaccination Campaigns

Faizabad, Badakhshan – Haji Abdullah, a well-known community leader from Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, has been able to successfully convince over 20 families to immunize their children against polio.

These families were initially influenced by misinformation and rumors, and had refused to vaccinate their children. He stated that he held discussions with these hesitant families in the presence of healthcare workers and religious scholars, providing them with accurate information about the polio vaccine and addressing their concerns that had arisen due to misinformation.

According to Haji Abdullah, these families later committed not only to vaccinating their own children but also to encouraging their relatives and neighbors to vaccinate their children to protect them from polio.

He emphasized that while polio has no cure, it can be prevented through vaccination, adding that it is the responsibility of every member of society to play their part in preventing this crippling and deadly disease.

This success highlights the critical role local leaders play in improving the health and development of their communities.

In addition, Haji Abdullah mentioned that, through his influence, he has been able to remove obstacles in the path of polio vaccination campaigns.

"When people see their leaders cooperating with vaccinators, they gain more trust in the process. We must stand with the people and guide them, reminding them that children's health is of utmost priority," he said.

He added that children's health determines the future of the community, and if we don’t prioritize their health today, we won’t have a healthy future.

Maryam Sultani, who has been serving as a volunteer in polio vaccination campaigns in Faizabad for over a year, praised Haji Abdullah’s significant role in these efforts.

"Haji Abdullah always helps us before each polio campaign begins, encouraging families to actively participate so that no child is left unvaccinated," she said.

According to her, the cooperation of Haji Abdullah and other community leaders like him has not only increased public awareness but has also led to higher participation in vaccination campaigns.

She noted that in many rural areas, it would be difficult to gain the trust of families and ensure their participation in polio vaccination campaigns without the collaboration of local leaders.

Mohammad Zahir, the elder of one of the families that had initially refused to vaccinate their children, explained, "At first, I was doubtful about the effects of the polio vaccine due to various rumors circulating among the people, suggesting it was harmful to children or could cause long-term health problems. These rumors made me skeptical. But when Haji Abdullah provided us with accurate information about the vaccine and explained that polio has been eradicated in many countries through vaccination, I realized that it is essential for the safety of our children."

Since then, Zahir has not neglected to vaccinate his children and ensures they receive regular vaccinations.

He stated that the real issue is the low level of understanding among many people, which makes them easily influenced by rumors and misinformation. He expressed confidence that, if provided with accurate and reliable information, no one would refuse to vaccinate their children.

Local leaders like Haji Abdullah not only play a key role in the success of vaccination efforts but also help change people’s perspectives and build trust within the community.

Families like Mohammad Zahir’s, who initially had concerns about the polio vaccine, have taken positive steps to protect their children’s health under the guidance of these community leaders.
